CBS announced in November that Young Sheldon will return for a seventh and final season in 2024.

Since premiering in 2017, the series has become a bona fide hit. Though its success was certainly fueled by its parent show, The Big Bang Theory, the spinoff prequel series found its own voice and earned a devoted audience. Airing 127 episodes to date, Young Sheldon gave Big Bang Theory fans a chance to dive deeper into the show’s universe and history.

Starring Iain Armitage as Sheldon Cooper, as well as familiar faces like Annie Potts and Zoe Perry, who plays Sheldon’s mom — and is the real-life daughter of Laurie Metcalf, who played Sheldon’s mom in The Big Bang Theory — the series quickly became a hit, thanks to its humor and heart. It pays homage to its parent series while also creating a captivating and hilarious story.

Since last season, fans of Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory have been speculating that the series might be coming to an end due to Sheldon’s age in the show and certain plot points hinting that Young Sheldon is starting to catch up to the story in The Big Bang Theory.

Here’s everything to know about Young Sheldon’s season 7.

CBS has already announced a premiere and finale date for the season, which will also serve as the series finale.

Season 7 will be released on Feb. 15, 2024, and will run for 14 episodes until its finale on May 16, 2024. CBS also revealed that Young Sheldon’s series finale will be an hour long.

In the announcement, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said, “We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”

After hearing the news about the final season, the Young Sheldon cast shared posts on social media to commemorate their time together on-set.

Armitage wrote on Instagram, “We will make the best 7th season we can possibly make- and behind the scenes there will be lots of laughter and lots of tears because I love all of these people so much.” The caption was next to a photo of him and his on-screen siblings.

Potts, who plays Meemaw, shared a cast photo also posted on Instagram, with the caption, “After seven fabulous, hilarious, fulfilling years, 'Young Sheldon' will say goodbye. It's a bittersweet moment.” Potts continued, “I have loved every moment of this work and loved every person who has made this wonderful show possible. I have been awed by the talent of my fellow cast members who feel more like family than colleagues. I am beyond grateful to all the 'Young Sheldon' viewers and fans who made us #1.”

Raegan Revord, who plays Sheldon’s sister Missy, also wrote on Instagram, “I will say more later, but right now I am feeling so so heartbroken, but also so grateful.”

She continued, “Filming these last 14 episodes will be so hard, but I am excited to get to opportunity to share this story with the fans and our Young Sheldon family.”

Right now it’s too early to tell what the final season will be about, but fans have been speculating it could serve as a bridge between Young Sheldon and the events of The Big Bang Theory.

Some think Sheldon might find his way to CalTech in Pasadena (where he’d eventually meet Leonard), while others think something could happen to Sheldon’s father, who dies sometime before the start of The Big Bang Theory.

It seems like all the major characters will be returning for season 7 — as nothing happened at the end of season 6 that would indicate otherwise.

Plus, with much of the cast writing on social media about how much they’re looking forward to filming the new season, it seems clear that they’ll all be present.

The final season of Young Sheldon will premiere on CBS on Feb. 15, 2024.

In the meantime, fans can stream the first six seasons on Max or the Max add-on subscription through Prime Video or Hulu.

Young Sheldon is also streaming on Netflix.

The finale of season 6 was pretty intense and had tons of cliffhangers, so season 7’s premiere will certainly be a must-watch.

In season 6’s final episode, Sheldon and his mom board a flight headed for Germany, where he’ll spend the summer. But back in Texas, a tornado rips through their town, leaving Meemaw’s house completely leveled. Since she now runs an illegal casino behind her laundromat — and all of her cash is stored in the house — she loses everything.

George and Missy also get caught in the tornado while they’re driving home from the Houston airport. They end up hiding in a ditch as the tornado passes straight over them. Fortunately, they’re unharmed, but their car gets flipped, stranding them in the middle of nowhere.

Sheldon’s brother Georgie, meanwhile, shelters from the tornado with his fiancé and her parents in their bathroom.

Fortunately for fans, Big Bang co-creator Chuck Lorre is currently in the early stages of making another spinoff.

According to Variety, the project was originally announced on April 12, 2023, at a Warner Bros. event, and it’s slated to premiere on Max, making it the first streaming-exclusive show in the franchise.

In a November interview with TVLine, Lorre said the show was still in the very early stages of development.

When asked about the project, he responded, “You don’t talk about the birth until the second trimester, I believe, is the rule. That’s a long way of saying no, I’ve got nothing to say about it other than it’s something that we are discussing.”
