A surefire way to troll any dad is to display any blatant disregard for basic automotive care, and this prank does the trick.
If there's one thing dads get very, passionate about, it's the maintenance of their automobiles.
I, personally, was never all that interested in cars or car care. But for some reason, now that I have two kids, I find myself comparing ratings, reviews, and personal user experiences on car forums for different types of motor oil.
It's absolutely mental.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that dictated by long-standing gender norms that as the father and patriarchal figure I'm more and more concerned with the care and safety of my family, which extends to frugal financial decisions. I can't be allowing our home to be compromised, and our belongings fall under that umbrella.
But please tell me why I'm so obsessed with upper cylinder lubricant and squeezing the most mileage out of my used car while protecting the engine?
Why am I so entranced with the low low cost of Marvel Mystery Oil and so exuberant about expressing to everyone in the world at how well it works?
It's a mystery that has yet to be solved, all we know is this: dads love car maintenance and affordably, tried-and-true automobile maintenance products.
Which is probably why this "olive oil in the car" prank is catching so many dads.
It all started with this tweet from @thedad who asked followers to send a photo of olive oil to their fathers, saying that their car's now making "weird sounds" after putting oil in their car.
So users did and, for the rest of the internet's delight, they screencapped their father's responses.
Some of the dads were very, very concerned. While others saw right through the ruse. Props to this dad who noticed the packaging and went all in with the joke.
Then there's this other dad who is very on the ball. He manages to turn a conversation about olive oil into one about taxes.
There were a lot of fathers who gave their kids the benefit of the doubt: they felt comfortable enough to know that there was no way their kid was that stupid.
Some of them even retorted with the most dad jokes of dad jokes. Technically, cars at nothing-a-tarian, or what would you call something that only consumes fossilized oils?
Then there were the dads who just didn't have time for any of their offspring's nonsense.
Mostly though, they all seemed to be in on the joke.
But the ones who got got, man did they really let their kids have it.
You can almost hear the horror in their fatherly voices. This one even implemented the use of his bitmoji.
Others offered some very practical advice.
Then there was this dad who was about to interrupt work to find out just what the heck was wrong with their kid.
Thankfully, it didn't have to come to that. If there's one thing we learned from this whole experiment, it's that there are tons of Dads out there with great sense of humor, and just as many who are very, very concerned with car maintenance.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to compare the reliability factors of used 3-row-SUVs, because I'll pay for a minivan, blargh.
