One-piece swimsuits should be a staple in your summer wardrobe. They’re chic, comfortable, and reliable — like a fabulous longtime friend who's always down for brunch. A quality one-piece swimsuit offers support without compromising style, but, just like with friends, it’s got to be a good fit.

"You want a suit that not only fits great but makes you feel great," says Olympic swimmer and silver medalist Emma Weyant, adding that comfort, flexibility, and durability are also essential. Celebrities like Sofia Vergara and Khloé Kardashian have already posted pictures in chic one-piece swimsuits this year, so if you haven't found one that's right for you this season, we're here to help.

We tested one-piece swimsuits in pools, oceans, and showers, and we took note of the fit, comfort, quality, performance, and value. We also gathered editor-loved favorites, scoured the internet for new styles from reliable brands, and spoke with Joanna Lovering, NYC personal stylist and empowerment coach, who helped us match one-piece swimsuit styles with various body types. She encourages folks to embrace their body (no matter the shape), and she offered suggestions based on her clients' feedback regarding confidence and comfort in a one-piece bathing suit.

Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

Mindy Kaling recently launched a swimwear collaboration with Andie, and when asked about her favorite piece during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, she specifically called out The Amalfi suit, stating, “There is a daffodil-colored one-piece — and I know that not everyone feels comfortable wearing a yellow bathing suit — but it is the most flattering cut.” This bathing suit has adjustable straps, underbust elastic, and sculpting fabric to help you feel your best when poolside, and if yellow isn’t your color, there are 13 other options to choose from, as well as two lengths and three fabric finishes.

Not only is it Kaling’s favorite one-piece, but it’s also our PEOPLE Tested top pick for a one-piece swimsuit. We tested The Amalfi swimsuit in the real world in pools and at a waterpark, and our tester loved its secure, comfortable fit that stayed in place while going down slides and playing water sports with her kids. This one-piece has no real downside, apart from its slightly high price tag and potentially overwhelming customization options.

Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

When we tested this one-piece swimsuit, we could not get over how comfortable it was! When our tester swam laps, she noted that this ruched bathing suit stayed in place and provided great coverage with a lightweight yet controlled feel.

The sweetheart neckline gives a little bit of flair while the sculpting fabric around the stomach area keeps everything in place. We think this swimsuit is a great deal for anyone looking for full coverage, and even though it’s a lower price, it feels high quality.

Who It's Good For Who It's Not Good For

This V-neck bathing suit from Everlane surprised our tester in several ways. First, the fabric is incredibly soft and stretchy, so it was comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Second, it dried in under 10 minutes after a swim in the ocean (with no salty residue to speak of), so our tester was able to move from the ocean to her next activity in comfort. And third, it's reasonable price.

We did find that the top of the suit didn't offer a lot of support around the bust area and the bottom of the suit can feel cheeky, so if you're looking for a modest cut, you may need to opt for another suit. Also, note that this one-piece is final sale.

Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

The Sidestroke is one of Summersalt’s bestsellers and for good reason. This one-piece delivers the trendy one-shoulder silhouette with long-lasting materials and full coverage. Plus, the unique cut-out back is one of our favorite details. The diagonal seaming looks great on any body shape and is supportive. And it comes in a whopping 15 colorways to choose from. When we tested this swimsuit, we loved that despite being a one-shoulder style, it felt secure and didn't limit our mobility in any way. However, it doesn't come with padding, and if you're in between sizes, we recommend sizing up.

Andie The Mykonos One Piece

Andie Mykonos One-Piece

Andie

Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

The Mykonos from Andie is not your typical full-bottom coverage one-piece. Sometimes opting for a deep V-neck swimsuit means you have to opt in for a cheeky look, too, but this plunge one-piece is different. We love the spicy combo of the red hot color and deep plunge neckline for a sassy suit that has your back (er, bottom), literally. We also like that the leg is cut higher than most full-bottom coverage suits, which allows for an elongated leg line while the rear of the suit is designed to stay in place.

Aerie Crinkle Scoop One Piece Swimsuit

Aerie Crinkle Scoop One Piece Swimsuit

Plus, the adjustable straps allow for even more customized comfort. This suit comes in two color options, but we’re fans of this aquamarine color. If you've ever slipped on an Aerie swimsuit, you know they are made for real humans with real bodies — which we appreciate.

Kona Sol Spotted Print High Neck One-Piece Swimsuit

Woman in high neck swimsuit Target. Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

If you want to lengthen the appearance of your torso, Lovering suggests going with a high-neck suit because it will draw the eye up to the top of the suit. This animal print number from Kona Sol does just that and gets bonus points for combining a high-neck front with a low-cut back — the dream for those wanting to elongate the look of their torso.

The criss-cross straps are a fun detail and add visual interest to the back of this suit while contrasting the high-neck front. Plus, we love the adjustable straps for a confident fit.

Who It’s Good For Who It’s Not Good For

If you’re able to invest in a great piece of women's swimwear, this Mara Hoffman suit is a choice you won’t regret. You can feel the quality in this suit and it’ll last you a long time; one of our editors has owned a colorblock Mara Hoffman swimsuit (similar to the Idalia One Piece) for nearly ten years and still gets compliments when donning it. (She’s a curvy girl who loves the bright colors and the boldness that comes along with the suit.)

We tested this Mara Hoffman Emma one-piece swimsuit and couldn't say enough good things about it: It's so comfortable, and you can feel the high quality. Plus, the fit was impeccable. The only true downside is the hefty price tag. But if you can swing it, we know you'll love this suit for years to come.

Sizes: XS-XL  | Materials: Recycled polyester, elastane | Care: Hand wash cold. Line dry.

How to Pick the Right One-Piece Swimsuit

Fit

Above all else, your one-piece needs to feel snug and comfortable. Look for materials that compress and stretch (like nylon and spandex). You want your suit to stay in place, whether you’re exercising in the pool, playing water games with the family, or lounging on the beach. Always check the brand’s specific sizing guide, and if you are between sizes, look for suits with adjustable straps or other features for a more customized fit. When in doubt, size up. Some suits come in various lengths for long torsos, so we promise a well-fitted swimsuit is possible.

Activity or Purpose

When shopping for your one-piece, think about what purpose it’ll serve. Are you lounging poolside or swimming laps? “For training and athletic wear, I always choose a tighter, more compressed fit, while for lounging and beach wear, I go for more of a comfortable, relaxed fit,” says Weyant. Certain suits like Weyant’s Micro Back One Piece are designed with chlorine-resistant fabric specifically for swimmers. If you're just looking to lounge poolside, an affordable pick like the Cupshe V-Neck One-Piece Bathing Suit may be all you need. If you want to do it all (swim, lounge, and keep up with the kids), our best overall pick, The Amalfi, won't let you down.

Style

Weyant thinks finding a “style that makes you feel confident every time you put it on” is key when choosing a one-piece. With an abundance of styles available, there’s bound to be one that floats your boat. Certain styles will highlight different features. Show off your legs in Aerie’s Shine Pique Babewatch One-Piece. Flex your back in Cupshe’s V-Neck Lace Up One-Piece. The best style is one that makes you feel great in your own skin.

Price

The pricing of one-pieces varies greatly. Our picks range from $30 to $350 — it’s just a matter of personal budget. Maybe you’re able to invest in one luxury piece or would rather snag several affordable suits. You may also want to spend more on a suit with certain features like sustainable materials including recycled nylon. No matter your budget, there’s a great one-piece for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know what size one-piece swimsuit to buy?

Swimsuit brands often include a size guide that details the specific measurements for each size, but it will require you to take your own measurements. By taking your own bust, waist, and hip measurements, you can compare with the brand’s sizing guide to find the appropriate fit. As you're shopping around places to buy swimsuits, it’s a good idea to do this for each brand, as sizing can differ by brand.

  • What one-piece swimsuit is in style for 2023?

  • Where are the best places to buy one-piece swimsuits?

Major retailers like Target and Amazon are popular places to buy swimsuits, thanks to their affordability and flexible return policies. Online brands like Summersalt and Andie are also popular options. They both offer extensive sizing, fit guides, and customer reviews to help guide your buying process.

Take Our Word For It

L.A Hubilla is a freelance commerce writer for PEOPLE and newly converted one-piece lover. For this article, she consulted Olympic silver medalist swimmer (and swimsuit designer) Emma Weyant on one-piece features shoppers should consider. She fielded suggestions on bathing suit styles for varying body types from personal stylist and empowerment couch Joanna Lovering, whose clients are worldwide, mainly in Fortune 500 companies, and defy all age, gender, and body shape stereotypes.

This piece was updated by Erin Johnson, senior commerce editor at PEOPLE. Erin consulted testing insights from a recent PEOPLE Tested swimsuit test and added additional options to this piece. To test one-piece swimsuits, our testers showered in the suits, timed how long it took them to dry, and then wore the bathing suits to the pool, beach, or whatever water activity area was available to them. They evaluated the suits' fit, comfort, quality, performance, and value. Top-scoring one-piece bathing suits were added to this list.
