Awake Surgery, a limited series on TLC, will contain three episodes. The series, which will include some amazing medical operations, will debut on Wednesday, December 14 at 10 p.m. ET. TLC will show the following two episodes at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday, December 15, and Wednesday, December 21, respectively. Awake Surgery, like the previous series, will be accessible on the TLC Go website one day following its broadcast debut.
Dr. Meegan Gruber, a plastic surgeon with 20 years of expertise, will be shown in the short series doing procedures on medical patients without the need for anesthetic. According to TLC’s explanation of Dr. Gruber’s innovative method, which has been authorized by the American Board of Plastic Surgery: She’s created her own ways of numbing, relaxing, and treating patients from all walks of life in order to do life-changing operations… all while the patients are fully awake.”
What can we anticipate from the first season of Awake Surgery?
Season 1 of Awake Surgery will cover a diverse range of patients, from those in need of facelifts to those undergoing life-altering procedures. With Dr. Gruber’s expertise leading them through the medical process, some patients on the program will be shown asking for mirrors to watch the surgery, while others will order take-out to eat after the surgery, and yet others will be on video call during the whole treatment.
The TLC description states that Dr. Gruber’s team will:
“Follow Dr. Gruber as she cuts, scratches, and laughs with her patients while they are awake during surgery.”
Awake Surgery will benefit patients who are either frightened of anesthesia or do not meet the criteria for it. According to the Cleveland Clinic’s website, individuals who fall into any of the following categories are recommended against undergoing anesthesia-assisted surgeries:
- Malignant hyperthermia in the family
- Seizures
- diabetes
- renal disease
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- sleep apnea
- neurological abnormalities
- Obesity
- Smokers of a certain age
